Winstone Pulp Heat Plant

A heat generation plant using site biomass residues, including sludge, at the Karori pulp mill.
Description of facility:

Owned and operated by Pioneer Energy under a long term contract to Winstone Pulp international. Technology provided by RCR Tomlinson. Additional Design Engineering expertise supplied by Aurecon (heat recovery from steam)..

The heat plant produces up to 12MW of process heat and is conveyed to the pulp mill’s flash dryers using thermal oil as the transfer medium. The plant now means Winstone no longer has to dispose of pulp biomass by-products in landfill sites but can instead use this material to power the plant. In addition to the heat plant EFI has also built a refiner heat recovery plant on site to recover waste heat from WPI’s pulping refiners. Utilising low grade heat previously lost from the mill, this “green” energy project complements the existing heat plant and green house gas emissions by 4,000 t/y CO2e.
