Lepperton Piggery

A Taranaki piggery is harnessing biogas from its piggery feedstock to generate electricity, and hot water as well as reducing smells and CO2 emissions.
Description of facility:

Piggery effluent is fed into a new covered anaerobic1 pond (60 metres x 20 metres x 6 metres) with a 7200 cubic metre capacity.
Coarser solids are removed, composted and sold at the farm gate. Trapped smells, biogas (methane) and liquid remain in the pond. Methane rises from the biogas, is cleaned and is then moved via a compressor to a six-cylinder biogas engine that spins a 40 kilowatt generator burning the methane turning it into electricity.
